Well done, Camila!

Last Friday, April 5th, Colegio San Benito was represented by our 11th grade student, Camila Crovari, in the Public Speaking Competition organized by ESU Chile.

Camila made it to the semi finals, the top 10, out of 35 or so schools participating in the first round. The winner of the Public Speaking Competition Chile goes to the International Public Speaking Competition to be held in London, in May.

The English-Speaking Union is an organization with its headquarters in the UK and branches operating in over 50 countries, whose main objective is to promote international and cultural understanding through the ever-increasing use of the English language.

ESU Chile was established in 2005 being its first formal event, the Public Speaking Competition. From then on, a number of activities have been included bringing together students from different towns in Chile.

Colegio San Benito is a member of this organization since 2022, year in which we first participated in the Creative Writing Competition; likewise, this is our 2nd year participating in the Public Speaking Competition but first time we reach the semi finals.

Our aim is to increase our school’s participation in the different competitions promoted by ESU since we strongly believe in the benefits of developing oracy in education.  Some of them are the promotion of confidence, development of critical thinking and cultural understanding; all of these, and many more, through the use of the English language.

The Public Speaking Competition is already part of our curriculum in High School, following all the rules, guidelines and theme provided by the ESU.  This year’s theme for ESU Chile and all other country’s national competition is:  “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so”. Our 9th, 10th and 11th grade students prepare a 5-minute persuasive speech using this theme as inspiration.

We want to congratulate Camila for her outstanding performance, commitment and responsibility in this activity; her parents for being with her along the way; as well as those who drove some students who attended the event to support Camila.

As Head of the English Department and founding member of English-Speaking Union Chile, I truly believe that the events promoted by this organization encourage our students to visualize and value the English language not as another subject, but as a means of communication.
